Your card is declined in China — but it works everywhere else

Your card works on Amazon and Booking.com, then Alipay or WeChat Pay rejects it. This is the single most common problem foreigners hit.

What you'll see

The card binds fine, or appears to bind, then fails at the moment you actually pay. Sometimes it fails during binding instead. The wording differs by app:

Why it happens

Usually it is not the Chinese app rejecting you — it is your own bank blocking a China-originated transaction as a fraud precaution. Card network matters too: Visa and Mastercard have the widest acceptance, while American Express, Discover and JCB are accepted by far fewer merchants.

Fastest fix, free: Call your bank and tell them you are in China and need to authorise international transactions. Then try again. This resolves it for most people.

  1. Call your bank first. Tell them you're in China and need to authorise international transactions.
  2. Check whether your card supports 3D Secure. Some banks require in-app confirmation for every foreign transaction.
  3. Try a different card. Some banks are noticeably more compatible with Chinese payment systems than others.
  4. Wait 24 hours and try again. Systems sometimes flag brand-new accounts.

If nothing works

Work down this list. Most people never get past the second line, but the rest exist so a payment failure never leaves you stranded:

  1. Withdraw cash from an ATM that accepts your network.
  2. Pay in cash — and expect difficulty getting change for large notes.
  3. Ask a Chinese companion or hotel staff to pay and reimburse them.
  4. Exchange currency at a bank counter, not a hotel desk.
